Simplified: This fall marked a full-circle moment for local woodworker Nate Boscaljon, who co-owns Boscaljon Design Co. with his wife, Anna. Five years ago, before taking the business full-time, Nate built his business plan through the Startup Sioux Falls Business Accelerator program. This fall, he's leading a group of entrepreneurs through the same journey.
Why it matters
- Nate and Anna Boscaljon hit a point during the pandemic where they both felt dissatisfied with their day jobs, and when Nate saw an advertisement for Startup Sioux Falls' 10-week Business Accelerator, he said it was a "no brainer" to apply.
- Going through the program, which at the time was facilitated by Eric Weisser of Weisser Distributing, Nate said he was really pushed to get specific about his target customer. That push to seek customer feedback and get specific ultimately led Boscaljon Design Co. to offer an entirely new service: custom cabinetry. Today, that service is a major arm of the business.
- Now, five years later, Nate is back in the Business Accelerator program, but this time, he's the one sitting in the facilitator seat. And he's using his experience in refining his target customer, finding his niche and growing his business to help other entrepreneurs figure out those same lessons.
"It's OK to still be figuring it out," Nate said. "That's how I've been trying to look at my role as a facilitator. I'm not the person to walk into a room and trick people into thinking I know everything, but I'm a really good 'figure out-er' of things if you give me the details."

Boscaljon Design Co. offers custom cabinetry and bespoke wooden furniture, as well as a fun variety of artisan gifts and art pieces.
Nate and Anna run the business entirely out of their home, where they've converted (and expanded) their garage into a shop. In the last few years, they've gone from a 500-square foot workspace to 1,000 square feet between their garage and shed.
When the business first launched, custom cabinetry wasn't on the couple's minds, but after a client request, they started realizing there was a market for it in the Sioux Falls area.
"In the back of my mind was always Eric (Weisser) challenging that you need to keep your eyes open," Nate said. "If there is something that's hitting, you need to be open to pivot to that."

Tell me more about Startup's business accelerator
The 10-week program leads entrepreneurs through the Co.Starters curriculum.
Participants receive guidance in building their business, from identifying a customer base to developing financial projections. They also use a lean canvas business model to map out all aspects of the business they're building.

The accelerator is geared toward people who are wanting to create solid, sustainable systems, launch a new product or service, or just ensure they're set up for success in the early days of business.
In addition to the curriculum and coaching, participants also get direct access to the Startup Sioux Falls community and a private cohort of like-minded entrepreneurs.
What happens next?
The fall cohort of the Business Accelerator is underway. Startup Sioux Falls is on track to have 22 Business Accelerator graduates this year.
