Roosevelt gets first Metro win in Coach Stahlberg era
Jason Stahlberg is in his third year as head coach at Sioux Falls Roosevelt. On Saturday at the Presidents Bowl at Howard Wood Field, the Rough Riders got their first win over a Metro Conference opponent during Stahlberg’s tenure.
Quarterback Weslee Werkmeister rushed for 128 yards with a score and threw for another 99 yards in Roosevelt’s 27-7 win over Sioux Falls Washington in Game 1 of the Presidents Bowl where both South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden and Sioux Falls Mayor Christine Erickson were in attendance.
Prior to Saturday, the Rough Riders had three wins in 2024 over Rapid City Stevens, Rapid City Central and Brookings. Last year, it was a single win against Stevens.
“It was a tough season last year, it really was,” Stahlberg said after Saturday’s win. “To get this win, it gives some validity to two years of really, really hard work and going through adversity and staying dedicated to the process.”
