This is a paid piece from The Sensory Studio.
Simplified: The Sensory Studio has evolved to become a play space that gives kids all sorts of sensory input, space for imaginative play and ways to regulate their fast-growing bodies. Here's what you need to know about this hidden gem.
Why it matters
- All kids need open-ended play, but for some kids, big, busy indoor playgrounds can be overwhelming or overstimulating. The Sensory Studio is an intentionally smaller space where kids can run, jump, swing and play without big crowds.
- It's also under the same umbrella as FUNctional Kids Pediatric Therapy, which means it's built with the help of licensed occupational and speech therapists who are experts in knowing what types of toys, sensory and movement opportunities, and imaginative play spaces kids need to support their growth and development. Public play times are typically best for children ages 0-6, however they also host camps and classes for school age children as well.
- In addition to The Sensory Studio, FUNctional Kids Pediatric Therapy also has a series of Play and Grow parent workshops. These workshops and classes help parents understand and connect with their kids, help parents connect with other parents, and support parents in learning how to better engage with and support their child.
"All of that sensory input in their environment is sending signals to their brain and helping them make associations of, 'how do I move my body?'" owner Nicole Fluth said. "Thatβs how we learn and unlock those fundamental development skills β giving kids the opportunity to have some of that natural imaginary play, pretend play, and developing skills with other friends around."
Tell me more
The Sensory Studio came to life after years of collaboration between two businesses. Previously, Jaclyn Small had opened The Sandlot as an indoor sandbox and play space in Harrisburg in 2020.
- At that time, Fluth and Small connected, and Fluth began to see patients at The Sandlot for therapy which quickly expanded into her team offering speech and OT services there, as well as partnering to host events in the space.
- In 2024, Small and Fluth decided to formally combine forces and move The Sandlot to Sioux Falls. It re-branded as The Sensory Studio and became connected to FUNctional Kids Pediatric Therapy with plans to partner together to expand their offerings.
Parents can rent The Sensory Studio for an hourly rate to have the entire space to themselves or for a couple of families to get together for a quiet play date. They also offer a variety of options for birthday parties and field trips
The Sensory Studio includes several distinct play areas, including:
- a sandbox with non-toxic play sand,
- an arts and crafts area,
- a variety of imaginary play stations,
- and several areas with swings, climbing equipment, slides, and crash pads to support regulation.
"It's really geared towards kids and families who want a smaller setting to be able to engage with their kiddos," Fluth said. "We created the pretend play spaces to unlock that imagination."
That type of sensory play can also help kids in the future when it comes time to start school.
"Being able to run, jump, crash and move their body helps develop the structure of the brain they need to develop skills later in life like sitting still and learning," Fluth said.
How can I visit?
The Sensory Studio holds open play and toddler time several times throughout the week. You can find available times here.
- The studio also hosts a two-, three-, and five-day part-time preschool. Though, private rentals of the Sensory Studio play space can still take place during preschool hours. Learn more here about the preschool and private rentals.
