Top-ranked Lynx got a visit from Governor Rhoden and a big announcement for the band

Brandon Valley junior running back Ryder Mueller had 299 yards of total offense as the top-ranked Class 11AAA Lynx defeated No. 3 O’Gorman 34-21 Saturday night in Brandon.

Mueller finished with 228 yards rushing on 34 carries. He also caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from Will VanLeur to open the scoring. VanLeur finished 9-of-16 for 181 yards passing.

O’Gorman took a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown pass from Chace Hermanson to Braylon Treasure. Hermanson threw for nearly 500 yards in O’Gorman’s Week 1 win over then-No. 1 Sioux Falls Lincoln. On Saturday against the Lynx, he finished with 184 yards on 16-for-32 passing.

Brandon Valley kicker Braydon Condon had a pair of field goals, one from 41 yards out and the other from 25.

Despite the win, the Lynx were penalized eight times, something Brandon Valley head coach Matt Christensen said the Lynx can improve upon, but can also live with.

“Some of that is maturity, but most of it is just trying so hard to get something done to make a play,” he said. “ It’s trying to help the team. It’s not chippy, or yappy. If it were, the bench really sends a nice message to the brain. You don’t have to go that far, but it was on the table as an option. But our guys really didn’t take it to the next level of unsportsmanlike behavior and verbalization. Some physicality can be ruled as too much, but unless it’s blatantly filthy, we’re all for the ruggedness.”
