Simplified: Republicans very much retained their control of the state legislature, with a number of seats decided before Election Day on Tuesday. But, Democrats still came out strong in several races, flipping four seats in the state legislature for the Sioux Falls area, and possibly two more depending on if/how recounts shake out.

Here's a look, district-by-district, at who will be representing the Sioux Falls area in Pierre.

District 2

District 2's lone state senate seat was decided before Election Day as Sen. John Sjaarda will return to Pierre unopposed and in a new chamber. But, the district – which covers eastern Sioux Falls to the Minnesota border and north of the Iowa border – will have two new faces in the South Dakota House of Representatives.

State Senate:

  • John Sjaarda (R): 100%

State House:

  • Adam Long (R): 41%
  • Manuel Luschas (R): 33%
  • Blake Rife (D): 26%

District 6

District 6's senate seat was also decided before Election Day as Ernie Otten will return to Pierre unopposed. And, with a full slate of house candidates, Republicans prevailed.

State Senate:

  • Ernie Otten (R): 100%

State House:

  • Jerry Jongeling (R): 33%
  • Elliott Neff (R): 29%
  • Austin Wolf (D): 20%
  • Garret M Campbell (D): 18%

District 9

District 9's lone senate seat was decided before Election Day as Sen. Joy Hohn will return to Pierre for another term representing Hartford and northwest Sioux Falls. The House race was quite close – enough so that there may be a recount – with less than 200 votes separating the winning and losing candidates.

State Senate:

  • Joy Hohn (R): 100%

State House:

Possible recount

  • Tesa Schwans (R): 35%
  • Megan Tschetter (R): 33%
  • Amanda Potter (D): 32%

District 10

District 10 is one of few districts in the Sioux Falls area that didn't have a race already decided ahead of Election Day. The district covers a squiggly bit of central Sioux Falls including McKennan Park and Whittier, then following Interstate 29 north and northeast stopping short of Brandon.

State Senate:

  • Michael Dupic (R): 37%
  • Liz Larson (D): 63%

State House:

  • John Pohlman (R): 21%
  • Kimberly Petterson (R): 19%
  • Adam Bair (D): 28%
  • Kathleen Brudvig (D): 31%

District 11

District 11 sits west of Interstate 29 and east of Tea/Ellis Road between 57th and 12th Streets. Six candidates sought to represent this geographically small but populous district, and as one of the closest races in the state, it's very possibly going to see recounts in both the senate and house races.

State Senate:

Possible recount

  • Chris Karr (R): 50% (4,209 votes)
  • Aaron Matson (D): 50% (4,175)

State House:

Possible recount

  • Brian Mulder (R): 30% (4,190)
  • Keri K. Weems (R): 29% (4,061)
  • Sonja Mentzer (D): 30% (4,234)
  • Tracey Quint (D): 11% (1,554)

District 12

District 12 has some heavy hitters who are no longer in play. After longtime lawmaker Arch Beal opted not to seek re-election, an open seat in the state senate is now going to be contested by two newcomers. Meanwhile, former Rep. Greg Jamison opted to run an ultimately unsuccessful Sioux Falls mayoral campaign instead of returning to Pierre. That leaves only one incumbent returning to Pierre: Amber Arlint, and it's likely she'll be joined by two new faces in a rare all-female district.

State Senate:

Possible recount

  • Kari Shanard-Koenders (R): 51% (4,009 votes)
  • Joe Zweifel (D): 49% (3,877 votes)

State House:

  • Amber Arlint (R): 35%
  • Kerry Loudenslager (R): 29%
  • Stephanie Arne (D): 36%

District 13

District 13's lone state senate seat was decided before Election Day as veteran lawmaker Sue Peterson will return to Pierre unopposed. Her fellow incumbent in the House, John Hughes, will not be returning with her, though, as Democratic challenger Ali Rae Horsted snagged his seat.

State Senate:

  • Sue Peterson (R): 100%

State House:

  • Jack R. Kolbeck (R): 35%
  • John Hughes (R): 32%
  • Ali Rae Horsted (D): 33%

District 14

District 14's senate seat was already decided as Larry Zikmund will return to Pierre unopposed. And he'll be joined by returning legislator Taylor Rehfeldt and newcomer Erinn Williams, who'll fill a seat previously held by Republican Tony Kayser.

State Senate:

  • Larry P. Zikmund (R): 100%

State House:

  • Tyler Tordsen (R): 30%
  • Taylor Rae Rehfeldt (R): 36%
  • Erinn Williams (D): 34%

District 15

District 15 one of few districts in the Sioux Falls area in which every seat was hotly contested by both parties. It's also one of few districts in the state which historically elects all Democrats. That trend continued Tuesday, as Erik Muckey moved to fill the senate seat vacated by failed mayoral candidate Jamie Smith.

State Senate:

  • Brenda Lawrence (R): 37%
  • Erik Muckey (D): 63%

State House:

  • Andre Zachariahs (R): 18%
  • Joni Tschetter (R): 19%
  • Kadyn Wittman (D): 33%
  • June CopperStad (D): 30%

District 16

District 16's lone senate seat was already decided, as Kevin D. Jensen will return to Pierre running unopposed. He'll be joined by Republicans Lisa Bogue and John Shubeck.

State Senate:

  • Kevin D. Jensen (R): 100%

State House:

  • Lisa Bogue (R): 39%
  • John Shubeck (R): 36%
  • Tim Rhead (D): 25%

District 25

District 25 runs north of Sioux Falls covering Dell Rapids and Flandreau. The district saw some drama earlier in the race when incumbent Sen. Tom Pischke was arrested and ultimately dropped out of the race. But, even still, Republicans were able to field a candidate to take his place. Meanwhile, the House seats were decided before Election Day.

State Senate:

  • Bart Sample (R): 58%
  • Bryan J. Breitling (I): 42%

State House:

  • Carrie Sanderson (R): 58%
  • Nick Buchholz (R): 42%
