Happy Monday! Megan here.
Weather check: Stormy
This week, you'll see the first articles from SF Sports Simplified!! I'm so excited about this new vertical – please share it with your sports-y friend and folks you know with high schoolers. 🏈 We'll also get the first of several budget hearings for the city.
Here's a look at what I'm watching:
Upcoming public meetings
Sioux Falls City Council
When: Budget hearing at 3 p.m. Tuesday followed by a regular meeting at 6 p.m.
Where: Carnegie Town Hall
Topics of interest: Councilors will have the first of several budget hearings this month – starting with an overview on general government spending.
- Then, during the regular meeting, councilors will take final action to add the $15 million grant from the Bezos Earth Fund (background here) to the city budget.
Minnehaha County Commission
When: 9 a.m. Tuesday
Where: Third floor of the county admin building
Topics of interest: Commissioners will discuss grant funds for victim assistance in the state's attorney's department. They'll also vote to authorize the highway department to purchase some new equipment an discuss some rezoning requests.
Lincoln County Commission
When: 8:30 a.m. Tuesday
Where: Commission meeting room, Canton
Topics of interest: It's a fairly short agenda, but with some big topics, including a board discussion on the Justice Center – one of the county's largest projects in the works (and probably ever??).
Other stuff I'm watching
- Budget hearings. The city is kicking off budget hearings this week, starting with the finance and human resources department, as well as a general overview from Finance Director Shawn Pritchett. I'll keep an eye on any interesting developments there.
- Outdoor pools. Why did the city say pools were closed Aug. 9 and then immediately backtrack? Also, why do the pools close so soon in general? I'll be reaching out to the city and also comparing the current pool season to what it's been in the past.
