Many of you may remember last spring Sioux Falls Simplified ran the second annual 'A Little Help' give-back campaign.

  • Over the last two years, Sioux Falls Simplified readers have donated a combined nearly $10,000 to nonprofits Journey of Hope and Owen's Outfitters

And this year, we're bringing back A Little Help to support another worthy organization: Bread Break.

Tell me more about Bread Break

Bread Break helps connect places that have excess food with places that need food.

It's that simple. And you know how we love simplicity around here.

Right now in Sioux Falls, Bread Break is managing about 80 routes each week in which volunteers pick up food from a local restaurant, for example, and bring it to an organization in need.

You're going to learn a lot more about Bread Break and the nonprofit's impact on our community over the next month in the hopes of giving them a boost in support.

What's the goal?

Our goal is to raise $5,000 to support their work.

How are you gonna do that?

The same way all good, community things happen: a lot of people each doing a little bit.

In every story about Bread Break this month, you'll find ways to donate to support their mission of feeding the hungry while reducing food waste.

I love supporting cool stuff.

And, new this year, we're also going to put our money where our mouth is as a community news outlet.

For every new paid member started in the month of September, Sioux Falls Simplified will donate 50% of the first month's subscription to Bread Break.

  • So, basically, you get to support community-focused local news AND an awesome nonprofit keeping the hungry fed in our city. Talk about a win-win.

And, because times are hard, and we know not everyone has extra cash laying around, we'll also share ways you can support Bread Break without spending a dime.

And remind me what 'A Little Help' is all about

Let me start with a little backstory. I used to work for a newspaper that ran a really cool, locally focused give-back campaign.

  • Every December, they'd pick a local charity, spend the entire month telling stories about the work the organization was doing, and raise money to help them keep doing that awesome work.

One year, I was the reporter selected to help tell those stories, and it was an experience that's stuck with me. There are so many amazing nonprofits in town doing amazing work, and it can be easy to let that work fall into the background if you're not directly impacted by it.

I wanted to bring back a similarly structured give-back effort, and thus, "A Little Help" was born.

  • Because, I think the Beatles said it best – we all get by with a little help from our friends.
